If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it twice — Trump and his rhetoric are dangerous.
He emboldens white racists to act out on their worst instincts. Some people say they like an in-your-face racist as opposed to one who hides it. I don’t. I think racists should keep their backwards, hateful, and demeaning views to themselves. We live in a country where racism is never going to go anywhere, so it’s beyond time to build an equitable society with strict repercussions for those who racially abuse others. Clearly, anti-racism conversations are not enough. Yet, racism is so deeply embedded in all systems — including legal, law enforcement, and government — that it’s practically impossible to enforce the necessary consequences for those who hurt the lives and livelihoods of Black people and other people of color. Especially when the racists are the ones in control and they refuse to even acknowledge racism. Do racists know they’re racist? Of course they do. They also know what they’re doing when they perpetuate it. They simply don’t care and they feel that they are not wrong. So, we find ourselves on this never-ending merry-go-round.
This is why we vote. This is why we never stop fighting. Never underestimate the importance of progress. Progress is what has MAGA Republicans up in arms right now.
We also fight so that the racists will not have their way.
Former president Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio senator, JD Vance, spewed racial abuse against Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio that’s causing Haitians to fear for their lives.
This is unconscionable.
Trump, at 78-years-old, also had a second person person want to shoot him yesterday at his West Palm Beach golf course. Both people who have attempted to assassinate Trump identify as Republican. Yes, it matters. The hate and violence that Trump spews has finally backfired on him.
Also, no matter how you feel about Trump, political violence is not good. What happens when everyone begins to think the solution for a politician you don’t agree with is to kill them?
As reported by NewsNationNow —
The claim [that Haitians are eating pets] has been refuted by local authorities, who said there are “no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community” in a statement.
The Haitian population is estimated to be between 15,000 to 20,000 in the area and has provided a boost to the nearly dying city, which had lost both industry and population over the last decade, reported Dayton Daily News.
Yet, Trump and Vance’s lies, which were originally told by Springfield residents, have lead to death threats and bomb threats. Haitians are fearing for their lives.
As published by PBS News —
Two colleges in Springfield held classes virtually on Monday. Wittenberg University said it received two threats over the weekend, “both of which were targeted toward members of the Haitian Community.” Clark State College said it would operate virtually through Friday “due to recent events in Springfield.”
Springfield City Hall, several schools, and state motor vehicle offices in Springfield were forced to evacuate last week after receiving bomb threats.
This is shameful.
Also, what’s not being said, is how the Haitian immigrants have breathed new life into a city where many former residents had fled and industries were dying due to a lack of available workers.
Per NewsNationNow —
The immigrants’ arrival brought an economic revival to the city, which was once a manufacturing hub but started to crumble once factories shuttered in the last decades.
For others, the immigrants have felt like a lifeline.
“We want more jobs in our community, and in order to fill those jobs, some jobs need to be people who are not originally from here,” Jaime McGregor, who owns the manufacturing factory McGregor Metals in Springfield, told PBS.
McGregor told the outlet that about 10% of his workforce, about 30 employees, is Haitian.
“I wish I had 30 more,” he said. “Our Haitian associates come to work every day. They don’t have a drug problem. They’ll stay at their machine. They’ll achieve their numbers. They are here to work. And so in general, that’s a stark difference from what we’re used to in our community.”
It’s troubling that local residents keep speaking of their anger and frustration as if that allows them to eventually behave criminally towards the Haitian population.
I think we should all keep an eye on what’s happening there. Thankfully, attention is now on the city.
